I have not written a letter like this before, and I would not write it if it were for myself. The Cathedral of His Glory family, located in San Miguel Escobar, Guatemala, has been hit by a devastating volcanic eruption, heavy rains from tropical storm Agatha, and mudslides. The water and mud pushed great boulders down the mountain onto the streets and houses. Deep mud covers everything and many houses were destroyed by the mudslide. There is no insurance or government aid to assist the people.

The Cathedral of His Glory building itself was not damaged and as many as 30 families are now living inside of the church. They have nothing left except the clothing they were wearing. The greatest immediate need is for money. Our missionary, Ronald Coffer Jr. can purchase those things needed in Guatemala City to meet the pressing requirements of food, bottled water, sanitation needs, tools to remove the mud, and building supplies to raise shelters. When things get back into a semblance of order, groups will be needed to help rebuild.

These people are your Christian brothers and sisters. They are part of the extended family of the Cathedral of His Glory in Greensboro. I am asking individuals and churches to help us. I personally guarantee that every cent given will go directly to meet the need in Guatemala.

Please earmark your donations for the Guatemala Relief Effort and send your support to:

To our Friends and Partners,

It is with great sadness in our hearts that Mimy and I write you concerning the recent natural disasters in Guatemala. Less than a week ago, one of Guatemala’s many volcanoes unexpectedly erupted and sent a cloud of ash billowing over Guatemala City. The ash that rained down on the capital forced the public schools, government ministries and the Aurora International Airport to close for several days. Several people, including a reporter and at least three children, were killed in this initial eruption and thousands more were forced to evacuate from the slopes of the volcano. President Álvaro Colom declared the area a disaster zone and his administration has done all it can to insure that the functions of government remain steady in the affected departments.

As if a volcanic eruption were not enough to cripple this fragile country, Tropical Storm Agatha landed off the pacific coast of Guatemala several days ago and has continued to batter Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador with high winds and torrential rainfall. A meteorological institute in Guatemala City estimates that the Guatemala City Valley has not seen so much continuous rainfall since the late-1940s. Although the church in San Miguel has not suffered any damage, several hundred people in San Miguel and Ciudad Vieja have been displaced from their homes as a result of mudslides on the slopes of the nearby mountains. Mimy and I are currently allowing 10 people to stay in our home while we wait for these natural disasters to abate. As with any natural disaster, cleanup will be a long and arduous process. Yet we know that our friends and partners will continue to support us during these difficult times.

Mimy and I want to humbly request that you continue praying for our ministry daily. We know that there is no problem that is too big for our God to handle and we also know that he will provide for us and the people of Guatemala during this great time of tribulation. If you feel like God has placed it on your heart to help us in anyway, please send me a brief email at rlcofferjr@mohglory.org with your ideas and contact information and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

It seems to me that the last few days have been a time of encouragement for our friends and colleagues in the United States. The recession of the economy has “shell-shocked” the Church, but now is not the time for us to back down. We must not withdraw, retreat, or give in to our circumstances. We must continue with the mission of carrying the Gospel to the lost at any cost. We must hit back twice as hard against the enemy.

The Apostle Paul testified to the church of Corinth concerning the church on Macedonia and said, “Though they have been going through much trouble and hard times, their wonderful joy and deep poverty have overflowed in rich generosity. For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will. They begged us again and again for the gracious privilege of sharing in the gift for the Christians in Jerusalem. Best of all, they went beyond our highest hopes, for their action was to dedicate themselves to the Lord and to us for whatever directions God might give them.”

The key to coming out of the “much trouble and hard times” that Paul referred to is to continue giving out of wonderful, abundant joy. The Glory of the Lord will shine upon His Church as we continue to do His will. Keep the Faith and be encouraged!

I always thank God when I pray for you, Philemon, because I keep hearing of your trust in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. You are generous because of your faith. And I am praying that you will really put your generosity to work, for in so doing you will come to an understanding of all the good things we can do for Christ.

Philemon 1:4-6

Why should we be generous? Why should we give towards the proclamation of the Gospel? Why is it so important to God? Does it really make a difference?

All the questions, doubts or even misunderstandings that we have concerning generosity can all be summed up into one word: LOVE. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave….” If you are a born again believer and you are washed in the precious blood of the Lamb and forgiven, it is a part of your nature to give. God’s nature within us inspires us to give.

The Apostle Paul wrote to Philemon that actions speak louder than words. Your trust, your love, your generosity and your kindness are a proof of your faith in God. By ministering the Gospel through your actions as well as through your words, your effort will be returned to you in an abundant harvest well beyond what you could ask for or even imagine.

I believe with you that 2010 will be your greatest year ever. I believe that God’s peace, love, joy, goodness and favor will increase in your life, family, career, business and ministry.

As we continue to serve the people of Latin America, we ask that you keep us in your prayers. More than ever do we need God’s wisdom as we carry the light and proclaim the Gospel. Thank you for being a faithful prayer partner and Kingdom Builder. We appreciate and value the love you have shown time and time again.

Please consider making Ministries of HIS Glory a part of your year-end giving. With your gift we can continue to Reach the Unreached and Tell the Untold.

In His Service,

Ron Coffer, Jr.
