Tropical Storm Agatha

Tropical Storm Agatha

To our Friends and Partners,

It is with great sadness in our hearts that Mimy and I write you concerning the recent natural disasters in Guatemala. Less than a week ago, one of Guatemala’s many volcanoes unexpectedly erupted and sent a cloud of ash billowing over Guatemala City. The ash that rained down on the capital forced the public schools, government ministries and the Aurora International Airport to close for several days. Several people, including a reporter and at least three children, were killed in this initial eruption and thousands more were forced to evacuate from the slopes of the volcano. President Álvaro Colom declared the area a disaster zone and his administration has done all it can to insure that the functions of government remain steady in the affected departments.

As if a volcanic eruption were not enough to cripple this fragile country, Tropical Storm Agatha landed off the pacific coast of Guatemala several days ago and has continued to batter Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador with high winds and torrential rainfall. A meteorological institute in Guatemala City estimates that the Guatemala City Valley has not seen so much continuous rainfall since the late-1940s. Although the church in San Miguel has not suffered any damage, several hundred people in San Miguel and Ciudad Vieja have been displaced from their homes as a result of mudslides on the slopes of the nearby mountains. Mimy and I are currently allowing 10 people to stay in our home while we wait for these natural disasters to abate. As with any natural disaster, cleanup will be a long and arduous process. Yet we know that our friends and partners will continue to support us during these difficult times.

Mimy and I want to humbly request that you continue praying for our ministry daily. We know that there is no problem that is too big for our God to handle and we also know that he will provide for us and the people of Guatemala during this great time of tribulation. If you feel like God has placed it on your heart to help us in anyway, please send me a brief email at rlcofferjr@mohglory.org with your ideas and contact information and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
